Unabridged Birth Certificate differs from an Abridged Birth Certificate, the abridged birth certificate states only the  id number, full names, gender and country of birth of the person concerned and is printed on the spot at any Home Affairs office, while the unabridged birth certificate in addition to the above, it further states the place of birth of the child, parents particulars, parents place of birth and country of birth of the parents. On average, it takes around 12 weeks or even longer for the application of the unabridged birth certificate to be finalized by the Department of Home Affairs



The abridged birth certificate was issued to the children whose birth  was registered with The Department of Home Affairs before the 4th April 2013, every child born after the 4th of April, 2013 is issued with the unabridged birth certificate.



​The unabridged birth certificate is used for in cases where the child is to prove who his/ her parents are for insurance claim and school purposes nationally, and abroad the unabridged birth certificate is used for to prove parents and parents nationality for  work, migration, citizenship or permanent residence application and etc.



Most foreign authorities require the unabridged birth certificate to have an apostille. Please verify with the consulate of the country you want to take your unabridged birth certificate to if your unabridged birth certificate has to be apostilled.



 



Vault Birth Copy 



Vault birth copy is a certified copy of the original birth register, certified by the Department of Home Affairs (head-office). A Vault Birth Copy is used in instances where the authorities of a particular country are not accepting the unabridged birth certificate for the purpose of application for citizenship by descent or passport application and other purposes. Depending on the country and the purpose that you need to use your vault birth copy or unabridged birth certificate for, some countries do accept the unabridged birth certificate and some require vault birth copy. Therefore please verify if you will need a vault birth copy or unabridged birth certificate.



Please note: No apostille is required on a vault birth copy.

To apply for a quick unabridged birth certificate, please download the unabridged birth certificate application form (bi 154), complete the birth certificate application form (bi 154) and select the appropriate box on the application for birth certificate form (unabridged birth certificate or vault copy birth) and email us a scan copy. Please ignore the birth entry number on the  application for unabridged birth certificate form as the birth entry number is only applicable to people who were born in South Africa some decades ago before and were not allocated with id numbers.



Please fill in your mobile number on the unabridged birth certificate form as the Department of Home Affairs will send you an sms notification as soon as your fast unabridged birth certificate is finalized. We will also email you a scan copy of your unabridged birth certificate​ for you to verify the information on the unabridged birth certificate before we can courier the quick unabridged birth certificate to you via door to door courier services.​

• ONLY PEOPLE BORN IN SOUTH AFRICA CAN APPLY FOR A SOUTH AFRICAN UNABRIDGED BIRTH    CERTIFICATE.

• BEING A CITIZEN OF SOUTH AFRICA BY DESCENT OR NATURALIZATION DOES NOT ENTITLE YOU TO A SOUTH AFRICAN UNABRIDGED BIRTH CERTIFICATE.

• THOSE THAT WERE BORN IN NAMIBIA WHILE NAMIBIA WAS STILL PART OF SOUTH AFRICA SHOULD CONTACT NAMIBIA FOR THEIR UNABRIDGED BIRTH CERTIFICATES AS THEIR RECORDS HAVE BEEN MOVED TO NAMIBIA.
